Battery size/brand?

Post by Rightthen »

Just a quick one....

020 battery. Yea or Nay?

Also, If I've got to go down to a 019, the best CCA/Ah I can find is on an Exide. Yea or nay?

000915105DK is the 95AH/450A battery commonly known as 019
000915105DL is the 110AH/520A battery for cars with heated front screen, commonly known as 020. If you want to use a different size, you will also need the correct retaining plate:

Ah, fantastic. I think I have a retaining plate from a heated ws car as luck would have it. I take it the battery trays are the same then?

I'm only really asking in the first instance as there's Varta and Bosch at decent money available in an 020 with 920cca/110Ah.

019 is the biggest that will fit in the stock tray. The 020 needs a different tray as well as bracketry and trim and other things made of unobtanium.

Stick with the 019. Have a look at Tayna.co.uk for (usually) the best prices.

Oh no! It was Tayna I was looking at

I'll have another scour. Whats the least cca I can get away with? Because I'm 90% sure the battery that's was in it under-spec'd.

Also, as I have conflicting reports, and no experience of such things, is EFB/AGM ok to use?

Don't use AGM - the D2 alternator doesn't make enough volts to charge EFB or AGM properly. They both need at least 14.7 to charge properly and the D2 struggles to even make the 14.4 needed for a traditional lead-acid. There is no advantage of spending all that extra money on them.

I'd usually go for Bosch or Varta (same thing, different stickers) blue top with a 4 year warranty. The silver tops have a few more amps and a 5 year warranty, and are usually proportionally more expensive except when they are on offer from time to time. Looking at Tayna's current range, the Exide offers more amps (900) than either Bosch or Varta (800 blue, 830 silver), for a significantly better price. I have one of those too, and it works just fine. I'd look for something with at least 800CCA.

For the record, never ever buy Yuasa, especially the silver ones from Halfrauds. They are utter garbage and the cause of more D2 electrical problems than anything else.

Ah, that's great. Thank you! I'll give it another look with all that in mind.

Aren't Yuasa extraordinarily expensive?!

Also, I've got a feeling that the lumpy running at idle with drive engaged might have been down to bad battery. We'll see when I change it, but I've had fuelling issues when my alternator was on it's way out. It was like the pump didn't have enough juice once the tank got down and gravity wasn't helping. Thought it was the pump, but changed for a new one and same issue. Noticed it starting to throw low voltage codes, changed the alternator and hey presto!
