Hi from Berkshire

Post by SharkGill »

Hi All, I recently replaced my 2002 A8 Quattro Sport with this lovely 2002 S8 in Atlas Grey. I actually stumbled upon this forum whilst researching into a manual gearbox conversion. Not sure if the car is known to the forums but this was first owned by Led Zeplin's Robert Plant. In all honesty, I didn't really know that was even though it was mentioned on the advert. I bought it just before Christmas, haven't even washed it yet let alone take any decent pics.
cheers
Gill

Very nice :) You don't see many in Atlas Grey.

Welcome. Good to see someone else down this end of the country! But what's that behind you, or is it the replaced A8?
Atlas grey looks fairly similar to the Agate grey of my first S8 but I guess it's subtly different!
VIN is 375 earlier than my current S8. Mine is one of the last ones made but is NOT an FE, is that?

Not an FE in Atlas. FEs are Avus silver, Black, Misano red and Aqua blue :)

The car behind is the 2.8 it replaced which I bought in December 2024. It served me well including doing three trips to Edinburgh and back. I run a small garage so the new customer will be bringing it back for an ABS sensor and coilpack.
It's amazing how much more attention the S8 gets compared to the A8 even though its essentially the same car. I've not had a chance to get it up on the ramp yet but I'm pretty certain it's got an aftermarket exhaust as it sounds quite fruitty.

Thanks MJ, I do like the colour as its got a browny tint to it depending on the lighting. I did notice yesterday though I think either the OSF wing or the bonnet is a shade off, I need to take a proper look when I get a chance

Ooooh, and own a D2 :D . Are you interested in the occasional S8 maintenance job, if so please message me your details? MJ (quoted here) did a huge engine-out overhaul of my S8 just a few years ago so it shouldn't need anything major for a while.
I don't have anything immediately needed, but I had to have the F125 switch replaced not so long ago by a local VAG independent; you just never know with these cars and it's due an MOT quite soon.

These cars always need something. Mine needs the passenger door and boot latch replacing as the car thinks they are open intermittantly.

Always interested in working on old german cars. DM me or call me if you need anything. The name is Karbide Autotechnik Ltd (shameless plug, Mods please remove if I've breached any T&Cs). I'm 5 stars on google which is nice. I also post some content up on Instagram, poeple like seeing their car worked on.

Boot latch will almost certainly be a little nylon/plastic component inside, not the actual microswitch. You can't realistically disassemble and replace that part so you'll need a replacement. Beware it totally failing and leaving you unable to open the boot without breaking/cutting stuff!
If you're in Slough that's only just over 10 miles from me, maybe arrange a meet up sometime to talk D2 nonsense?

Not a problem at all. I am very happy to hear of people who are prepared to work on D2s, since I'm not able to any more (because of long covid).
