What's the status now then?
Ok, so.... Decided to change the fuel filter even though i know it wasn't all that long ago since it was done. It started, ran perfectly for around 6 seconds then died (as has been the case since the issue started). Sounds mad, but it's almost like it gets to "have a rest" it'll run for a short time then just turn with the odd splutter. It feels like fuel but I'm fairly convinced it's getting plenty at the rail. Can someone answer me this (because I'm just over thinking now) when you turn the ignition, before you actually start the car, should the battery light go off? It goes off when you make the final turn, but not before.
*sometimes it'll go for slightly longer, as in when it drove round the corner.
This HAS to be fuel. But other than pulling the tank I've been through every bit of the lines. And if it's leaving the tank (which it appears to be as every bit of the lines are full and have pressure) then looking in the tank would be fruitless, surely?

It's the way it dies. Without explanation!

Got to charge the battery now and have a go later. I'm going to spend the afternoon cooling logs to see if i can find some fault finding zen. I've got tomorrow on it so any ideas at all I'm willing to explore

Battery light stays on if you don't start the engine.

Isn't there an immobiliser situation where it will allow the engine to be started but won't run on? Dredging my memory here.....

I've never had the little key light thingy pop up, or had any codes thrown of that nature. It feels to intermittent to be immobiliser, if you know what i mean? . Unless it's a fault with the actual unit or something??

It'll run for a second and then shut off cleanly like you turned it off.
If its fuel, it tends to splutter a bit then slow down and die, and won't pick up speed if you press the pedal.
2 things:
1, pull the pump cover in the boot, start it, and then run back to the boot and see if the pump makes any noise as the engine dies. If it starts whining / howling then its cavitating because it doesn't have fuel in the pump housing.
2, After it has died, loosen the banjo bolt on the top of the pump a little and see if you get a spray of fuel. The pump has a check valve in it to hold pressure. If the engine is dying through lack of fuel, there will be minimal pressure in the lines so you won't get a spray. If its dying because of other factors, the fuel will still blast out of that joint at high pressure.
3, Is the vacuum line between the manifold and fuel pressure regulator attached and intact?

It's got to be fuel. This is exactly the scenario

I going to try this first thing tomorrow. There was pressure at the fuel filter today but that doesn't necessarily rule this out, does it?

Yes, 100%
