Boot gas struts

Post by HPsauce »

I'm sure there's some information about this on "the other resource" but its down at present, so....
My boot is getting heavier to open, though it will stay up if fully lifted, so I think one strut is failing at least.
Does anyone have a known source/specification for these and are they different to the bonnet?
Also any tips/techniques on the process to swap over would be very much appreciated. 8-)

febi 31678 £25 a piece from autodoc. you just need a flat blade screw driver to replace them, takes 30s per side.

Job done, slightly disappointed in that the units that arrived were black, but shiny, but they were cheaper!
Found an old broom handle that was just the right length to prop the boot while working; it now opens and closes as it should.

I couldn't figure out how to undo the spring clips on the old ones at first but a small electrical screwdriver levered them out far enough.
One unit was very soft, the other definitely below par. Oddly the bonnet ones are still fine, but I guess they get less use.
The replacements just pushed straight on once I'd managed to compress them slightly to fit, better to clip the bottom on first.

Discussion with eBay to follow - not as described!

So, moving on I decided to have another closer look at my bonnet struts.
My research leads me to: 4D0 823 359F or FEBI 27675 530mm long, 223mm stroke, 245N force (oddly somewhat less than the boot which is 300N).

When I open the bonnet I do have to lift it a bit, but it stays up. However I realised that I have to lift it quite firmly for the last few inches, is that normal?
If I don't do that final firm push it sits somewhat lower, ideal for banging my head on! It feels that it's maybe sub-optimal and is quite easy to drop down. Time for new struts?

If it stays up I would leave it unless you're someone like me who lifts if every other day. Should still have plenty of life left in it.

The eBay seller is I think trying to lead me on a merry dance, just bouncing back and forth with irrelevant requests. The latest is for a close-up picture of the labels on the struts, even though they already have pictures of the labelling on the packaging and pictures of the struts in and out (as requested) of the packaging that prove they are black!

The actual struts, as shown by the printing on them, are made by Stabilus, which is fine. Rummaging online it seems that Febi largely just repackage Stabilus struts and, according to some, sell them on with less warranty!

In reality I suspect not, one of the struts makes a pretty unpleasant "graunching" noise as it approaches fully open, about the point where I have to start "encouraging" it. Onto the "to do" list.
