It's not just the battery....

Suck, squeeze, bang, blow. Ideally in that order.

This should make the car drivable and save you from working in the cold.
Spoken like a man that's frozen in the boot of an Audi before

Thank you. I'll give it a go. Just replacing some o-rings would be far preferable!

They were, but there don't appear to be any genuine VDO / Continental units left, at least not that I can find from the usual sources.

Having spoken to a friend in the motor trade, the easily available options of Lemark, Lucas and Intermotor are all chinesium garbage and to be avoided, as is the Magnetti Marelli. I think the only option we have now may be the Esen SKV which I believe is made in Poland. I've no personal experience of this unit, but I've used Esen SKV parts before and have no complaints, and I'd trust something made in Poland a lot more than anything made in China. I will have to use one of these when I get my murple back up and running.

I'd actually given up and resided myself to the idea of a Lucas, or putting my original back on, so this is actually great news. I shall grab one of those if it's goosed. I might just replace anyway if I'm going to drag it all out to do the o-rings. The used one came off a 100k car, but who knows how long it had sat before I got it. A very long time, I suspect. I'll let you know if I have any issues with it, but that sounds pretty hopeful. And not too pricey either!
