It's not just the battery....

Suck, squeeze, bang, blow. Ideally in that order.

This should make the car drivable and save you from working in the cold.
Spoken like a man that's frozen in the boot of an Audi before

Thank you. I'll give it a go. Just replacing some o-rings would be far preferable!

They were, but there don't appear to be any genuine VDO / Continental units left, at least not that I can find from the usual sources.

Having spoken to a friend in the motor trade, the easily available options of Lemark, Lucas and Intermotor are all chinesium garbage and to be avoided, as is the Magnetti Marelli. I think the only option we have now may be the Esen SKV which I believe is made in Poland. I've no personal experience of this unit, but I've used Esen SKV parts before and have no complaints, and I'd trust something made in Poland a lot more than anything made in China. I will have to use one of these when I get my murple back up and running.

VDO 405-052-002-001Z
ESEN SKV 02SKV275 <edit for future readers: THIS PUMP IS NOT SUITABLE for the D2 :x )

I'd actually given up and resided myself to the idea of a Lucas, or putting my original back on, so this is actually great news. I shall grab one of those if it's goosed. I might just replace anyway if I'm going to drag it all out to do the o-rings. The used one came off a 100k car, but who knows how long it had sat before I got it. A very long time, I suspect. I'll let you know if I have any issues with it, but that sounds pretty hopeful. And not too pricey either!

So, I bought the polish fuel pump. Just got the old one out and noticed the new pump only has one pipe at the bottom as opposed to the 2 that the VDO has. Is this still going to work, or is the second pipe essential? I have a currently working VDO, but it's got at least 110k miles on it so don't really want to put it in just to have it die later. Replaced all o-rings etc. I'd really like this to be the last time I go boot mining for a good while

Yeah Mike bought one too. The listing is incorrect, that pump is not suitable :x Without the second outlet it won't drive the suction jets to balance the tank and you run out of fuel at 1/4 tank.

The seller Mike bought it from was extremely difficult about sending it back. Hopefully you didn't buy it from the same people

eBay strikes again  I'll put the VDO in for now then. Snapped the bloody front clip, too :? I've got a spare but its in Scotland. I'm trying to devise a fix until I can get the spare. Any cunning blags appreciated.

Ignore it, carry on. It works perfectly well without it.

Can I establish from this that there are now no fuel pump options avaliable?

Just the Chinese ones, which I've just had to order for now as after I fit my used VDO, it wasn't turning :( I think I've got another in my spare housing, but cannot remember it's history so I'll see how China do. I guess the worst case I'll be replacing every 40k instead of every 100k.
